I read the other reviews which refered to the possible injuries of the old FN shelves so I'm not going to repeat what they all said but I am really very happy with the design of this new shelf. The possibility of injury seems pretty limited and the only drawback that I saw was that the front end of the shelf sits a little high. I also do not use the ramps in my cage (so that my ferrets use their muscles to jump onto the shelves) so I didn't even know that you had to change the ramps but evidently you do. You get the modification kit (two little black things) with the shelf and it doesn't come with the actual ramp itself so don't buy it thinking that it will! As far as the price...well I always think things should cost less than they do but I don't think that the price is bad. Maybe it could come down a little and I'd be really happy but the $12.99 I bought it for wasn't bad. All in all I really love the new shelves.

I bought two of these for my 4 prairie dogs in a double level critter nation cage. The new design is much more chewable (had to buy the scatter guards for bottom pans just to prevent more of those from being chewed up). With one good push, my PDs would be able to lift the pan from the rack, so I drilled a few small holes & secured the pan to the rack with zip ties. I also used zip ties to secure the shelf to the cage. *Safety first! I'd love to see scatter guards available for the shelves.

I recently purchased the new Ferret Nation replacement shelves. Overall, the design appears to be to an improvement over the original shelves. I didn't have any problems with the old shelves during the many years I've had the Ferret Nation cage, but there were reports of the old shelves causing injuries. The original shelves were plastic sheets whose corners inserted into the wire frame and had direct attachments for the ramps. The new shelves are a wire frame with a half tray attached to the top. The raised edges of these half trays are very convenient for cleaning and containing messes. They also come with some hardware to attach the old ramps to these new shelves. They do NOT, however, come with new interior ramps--as implied by other reviews and the pictures used for this item. I was VERY disappointed with that since my old ramps are quite worn and I was looking forward to new ramps attached to these new shelves.
Beyond the lack of attached ramps, there are a few other shortcomings with the new shelves. The biggest of these is that the ramp between levels no longer sits flush with the bottom shelf because of the raised shelf edge. Instead, one side of the ramp sits on the raised edge and the other side hangs about a centimeter up in the air...until a ferret tries to go down the ramp. This makes for some unsteady ferrets and more noise as they move between levels. Another issue is that the front of the shelves aren't attached to the frame (they attach in the back), so my boys keep trying to push the shelves up while standing on the ramps. I've tried a few things, but nothing so far has proven effective in keeping the ferrets from "flapping" the shelves.
Overall, I would say that they are worth the purchase if you are looking to avoid the possibility of injury (reports are very infrequent, so it might not be worth the worry) and something easier to clean. However, the obvious poor design issues make the new shelves a bit of a burden over the original shelf designs. You'll have to break out the tools to figure out a way to get the mid-level ramp to sit flush and keep the shelf trays attached to the frames. The oversight of not including new interior ramps with the new shelf design is a big negative in my opinion. If they had included the attached ramps, I would have said these were reasonably priced. But, without the ramps and with the glaring design issues, I would have liked to see these priced under $10, if not at around $5. There just are not enough materials and quality workmanship in these shelves to justify the price.

I can't tell you about how many horror stories I have heard about the old shelves; ferrets losing toes, feet, and lives. These new shelves are the answer many people have been looking for! No longer do I have to cover the shelves in duct tape! There is one thing that I had to do- the shelves are quite heavy and if knocked down I imagine they could do a bit of damage. My youngest girl learned how to knock the old shelves down constantly and I found if I zip tied the shelf to the cage it stopped. I did the same for the new shelves and I haven't had one issue! I have 6 ferrets that are bouncing on these day in and day out. Small hooks attach the ladders to the shelves now and if you have a determined fuzzy they can push them around a bit but even my two kits haven't been able to knock them off! Thank you so much for providing these! I feel much better with my fuzzies in their home now!

These new shelves are great! I am going to replace all of my old shelves with these. They can be covered with an old pillow case and stay clean. There is no wire for poop to get stuck in if they go on the shelf. Super excited about these new shelves.

These shelves came with my Ferret Nation 142 cage. I do not like the new shelf design. The old design was much better. 1) There is nothing to snap the plastic shelf to the metal part it lays on to keep it in place. This makes it very easy for ferrets to push it up, and out of place. 2) The ladder that goes to the top level doesn't lay flat on the shelf. It lays on the lip of the shelf, and there is a pretty good size gap between the shelf and the ladder. 3) The ladders doesn't stay on the shelves very well with the clips. Its very easy for ferrets to push the ladders out of place. I think they should of either kept the old design, or they should of done a better job when designing these new shelves. I am very disappointed with them.

The newely revamped shelf is a huge improvement over the previous one. It adds extra floor space and with the lip helps keep litter contained. It also makes a safe landing for the area where the drop down ladder rests.
We can finally use this new style (with some slight modifications) with our chinchilla rescue. If anyone is interested, they can see our website for info on second level cage surrounds at Whimsy's Menagerie & Chinchilla Rescue.
